Grozny


Grozny (also sometimes written as "Groznyy" in English) is the capital of the Chechen Republic in Russia. As of 2002, Grozny had a population of 210,720.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Grozny's population has fallen by almost half, in large part due to the intense fighting that took place in the city during both the First Chechen War (1994 to 1996), and the early stages of the Second Chechen War (1999 onwards). The city has suffered artillery bombardments, missile attacks and street fighting, causing the United Nations (in 2003) to call Grozny, the most destroyed city on earth.
