Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad is a sea port, and the administrative center of the Kaliningard Oblast, which is an exclave of Russia lying on the Baltic Sea coast between Lithuania and Poland. As of the 2002 census, the city had a population of 430,003.

Kaliningard was once a German city, known by the German name of Königsberg. The city was captured by the Soviet Red Army, after a brutal and extended series of battles during the final stages of World War II. As was agreed by the Allies at the Potsdam Conference, sovereignty over the city and the surrounding area was transfered to the Soviet Union (the city became part of the Russian SFSR. The name of the city was changed from Königsberg to Kaliningrad in 1946, in honor of Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin, one of the original Bolsheviks, who died that same year.

Kaliningrad had an estimated population of 820,500.

Kaliningrad, Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania 1:600,000 Travel Map, waterproof, GPS-compatible REISE

This map is waterproof and tear-resistant, durable enough to survive time spent in the rucksack, pocket or on a restaurant table. It is double-sided to provide the best balance between a good scale and a convenient sheet size (size 100 x 70 cm / 39.5 x 27.5 in) with topographic and tourist information. Coverage expands from eastern Poland (Malbork, Elk, Olsztyn) to St.Petersburg in Russia and includes the whole of the Kaliningrad region (Kaliningradskaya Oblast) of Russia. Old German names are shown for main towns in these areas, as well as for some of the locations within Lithuania and Latvia.

Road and rail networks are easy to see on a clear base which presents topography by altitude colouring with contours, spot heights, mountain passes and names of mountain ranges, and marshes. Road network includes local roads and tracks and gives driving distances on main and secondary roads. Ferry connections are also marked. Internal administrative boundaries are shown with names of the provinces.

National parks and protected areas are marked and symbols highlight various places of interest, including campsites, UNESCO world heritage sites, archaeological remains, castles and churches, museums, viewpoints, beaches, etc. The map has a grid with latitude and longitude at intervals of 30' and an extensive index of localities which lists national parks separately. Multilingual legend includes English, high quality German cartography.

  • Imray Laurie Norie Wilson
Product Description:
The nine countries bordering the Baltic Sea offer an immense variety of cruising grounds, peoples and cultures. There are thousands of harbours and innumerable anchorages, and it would take an entire bookshelf, to cover them all in detail. The information contained in this book is therefore selective. It has been chosen for its value both at the planning stages - preparing the yacht, choosing the most suitable route, timing and communications etc - and again on arrival, when a general overview of each individual country is followed by specific harbour information. Where detailed cruising information is readily available - effectively Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland - only selected harbours are covered, chosen, with a few exceptions, as fulfilling certain key needs. Where cruising information is more limited - Poland, Kaliningrad, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Russia - many smaller harbours are also featured in detail. In addition to comprehensive suggestions for further reading (and sources in each country from which they may be ordered) more than 200 websites are listed, again chosen for their relevance both at the planning stage and en route. In order to facilitate the latter, as well as for general communication, details of internet access points are included for most major harbours. This 3rd edition has been produced by a team from the Royal Cruising Club and contains substantial changes. Coverage of the West Coast of Sweden, the Gota Canal and Gulf of Bothnia has been extended and there is more information detailed information on the Baltic states. Throughout there are new plans and photos and the technical data on countries and navigation has been thoroughly revised. Beautiful, secluded anchorages, picturesque canals, bustling marinas, dramatic cities - all await those considering a Baltic cruise.
