Kursk

Kursk is a city in western central European Russia, and administrative center of the Kursk Oblast. As of the 2002 census, Kursk had an estimated population of 412,442.

In 1943, the largest tank battle in history, and the last major German offensive on the Eastern front, took place in the vicinity of Kursk. During the Battle of Kursk, 800,000 German troops backed by 2,700 tanks and 2,000 aircraft attacked Soviet forces of around 1,300,000 troops with 3,600 tanks and 2,400 aircraft. The German offensive failed to break through Soviet lines, and the Soviet forces then launched their own counter offensive driving the Germans back even beyond the original start lines.
