Murmansk

Murmansk is a city in the extreme Northwest of Russia, close to the borders with Finland and Norway. As of the 2002, Murmansk had a population of 336,137.

Murmansk lies on the Kola Bay (which connects to the Barents Sea), and is home to a seaport, which, despite its northerly location, is ice-free all year round. The port is home to Atomfloat, a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers, and is an important base of the Russian Navy.

Product Description:
In 1990, Henry Swain sailed his 34-foot yacht Callisto to Murmansk. He had been there once before, 45 years earlier, on a Royal Navy warship escorting American merchant vessels supplying vital aid to the Soviets. U-boats lay in wait off the Russian coast and the Luftwaffe threatened attacks from bases in Norway. The Arctic offered another hazard-ice.
