Volgograd

Volgograd (known as "Stalingrad" from 1925 to 1961) is a city in southern Russia on the West bank of the Volga River. As of the 2002 census, the city had a population of 1,011,417

The city (then known as "Stalingrad") became famous during World War II, when it was the site of a major battle against the Germans that became a turning point of the entire war. During the battle, the German advance was first stopped in the rubble of the city, and then the German forces in the city were surrounded by a Soviet counter offensive.
