Nizhny Novgorod (known from 1932 to 1990 as "Gorky", in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky). is the 4th largest city in Russia, and the administrative center of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and Volga Federal District. As of the 2002 census, the city had a population of 1,311,252.
