  • Letters from Vladivostock 1894 1930
Product Description:
In 1894, Eleanor L. Pray left her New England home to move with her merchant husband to Vladivostok in the Russian Far East. Over the next thirty-six years ― from the time of Tsar Alexander III to the early years of Stalin’s rule ― she wrote more than 2,000 letters chronicling her family life and the tumultuous social and political events she witnessed. Vladivostok, 5,600 miles east of Moscow, was shaped by a rich intersection of Asian cultures, and Pray’s witty and observant writing paints a vivid picture of the city and its denizens during a period of momentous social change. The book offers highlights from Pray’s letters along with illuminating historical and biographical information.

  • Russia Baikal Siberia Vladivostok Kamchatka map
Product Description:
Russia East (Lake Baikal to Vladivostok) 1:2,000,000 Travel Map, waterproof, GPS-compatible, REISE

This map is waterproof and tear-resistant, durable enough to survive time spent in the rucksack or pocket. It is double-sided to provide the best balance between a good scale and a convenient sheet size (size 100 x 70 cm / 39.5 x 27.5 in) with topographic and tourist information.

Coverage extends over south-eastern Russia at scale 1:2,000,000. The western half of the map starts from Lake Baikal (Lake Baikal itself is included). In the east, the map reaches Sakhalin island off the Pacific coast and extends north to Yakutsk. Names of larger and selected smaller towns are in both Cyrillic and alphabet; smaller places, administrative units, geographical features and places of interest are in alphabet only.

Clear cartography presents the region's topography by altitude colouring with contours, numerous spot heights and names of mountain ranges. Swamps, marshes and seasonal lakes and rivers are also shown. National parks and protected areas are marked and symbols highlight various places of interest, including locations with tourist accommodation, UNESCO World Heritage sites, museums, etc.

Road and rail networks are easy to see. Road network includes selected unsurfaced local roads and tracks, shows locations of petrol stations, gives driving distances on main and secondary routes, and indicates border crossings (including the M52 route from Novosibirsk across the Altai Mountains to Mongolia). The course of the Trans-Siberian railway line is easy to follow across the map and local airports are indicated.

The map has a latitude and longitude grid at intervals of 1º. Multilingual legend includes English, the map has a place name index plus a list of national parks. High quality German cartography.

For Lake Baikal, a separate map is available from the same publisher at scale 1:550,000.

  • The Long Way to Vladivostok
Product Description:
Riding a motorbike in howling high winds and freezing temperatures to reach Nordkapp, the northern-most point of Europe could have been disastrous. But for Shirley Hardy-Rix and Brian Rix it was one of the best days of their lives. This is what the well-travelled retired couple had hoped for when they planned to fill a gap in their riding experience and take on Scandinavia, the old Silk Road in Central Asia and the world's largest country, Russia. They shipped their motorcycle to Greece and spent the next six months riding to the northern-most tip of Europe and then taking the long road to Vladivostok in Russia. From freezing cold to the searing heat of 47C in the deserts of Central Asia, Shirley and Brian pushed the boundaries, tackling icy roads and gravel tracks. They rode through water crossings and deep sand drifts to reach some of the most beautiful cities on the Silk Road. 'The Long Way to Vladivostok' takes readers through some of the world's most glorious and remote areas, sharing the joys and hardships of life on the road. Experience their travels from the comfort of your armchair or be inspired to pack your bags and hit the road.

Product Description:
Ever had the desire to jump in your car and keep driving; to wave goodbye to routine and commitment, to drive into the unknown hungry for adventure? Well, that is precisely what overland travel writers, Chris Raven and Simon Raven, decided to do whilst stacking boxes of frozen oven chips in a -30 degrees freezer. Not being petrol heads and having zero knowledge of the internal combustion engine, the brothers fired up their rusty Ford Sierra Sapphire and headed east. After clocking up over 11,000 miles from the UK, quite literally living in the car, they miraculously arrived in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok in Siberia on the Sea of Japan. What they had in fact done was to drive the entire length of the Trans-Siberian Highway before it was finished, which crosses Russia and the notorious Zilov Gap in a 6,200 mile swath of cracked tarmac and potholes. Along the way our trusty heroes drink vodka with Chechen criminals, escape highway robbery, trade banana flavoured condoms with Russian cops, meet the eccentric and plain weird at truck stops in darkest Siberia, endure torturous road conditions and have a race to the finish with the Germans. Surviving this insane journey by the skin of their teeth the brothers are forced to confront their worst fears in this toe-curling comedy of extreme road trip adventure. Priding themselves in going it alone, Simon and Chris have been noted by Lonely Planet for their talent to portray an “accurate view of what to expect”.

Product Description:
With their children grown and flown, Mike and Jo Hannan discover that it's never too late to live the dream and embark on an epic tour of Europe and beyond on a 1150cc BMW motorbike called 'Elephant'. With a limited budget, and all the essentials packed, they hit the road. Journeying through sunshine and rain, over good roads and bad, they explore France, Spain, North Africa, Russia and other former Soviet countries, Mongolia and Korea, taking in all kinds of sights and meeting all kinds of people. Along the way they also learn the difference between a tourist and a voyageur, and come to understand the deep universal significance of their journey. This book is a record of that journey, and your ticket to ride with the Hannans for the adventure, sharing the observations and reflections, tasting the fine local food and drink (and a few dishes that were not so fine!), and experiencing all the delightful surprises and unforeseen obstacles such as mechanical faults, visa problems, and very nasty weather!
